A look back at workplace accidents
The New Year is now in full swing, goals and resolutions have been set and we’re looking forward to seeing what 2019 brings. However, it is important to understand the risks that have effected businesses like yours in previous years, so you can take steps to prevent and protect yourself and your employees and ensure day to day trading isn’t effected.
Each year a number of statistics are released around incidents and accidents that happen in the workplace.
A key statistic from 2017-18 is that the number of self-reported, non-fatal injuries in the workplace had decreased. This refers to those injuries reported directly by the person involved. This number has been showing a general downward trend since 2000. This is largely due to fewer self-reported workplace incidents and specifically fewer musculoskeletal disorders.
It’s estimated that 555,000 non-fatal injuries were self-recorded during the year. The most common types of workplace accidents which caused these injuries were:
- Slips, trips or falls on the same level (i.e not a fall from a height) – 31%.
- Handling, lifting or carrying work tools or materials – 21%.
- Struck by a moving object – 10%.
- Falls from a height – 8%.
- Acts of violence – 7%.
Unfortunately the number of fatal workplace accidents in 2017-18 was 144, up from 135 the previous year, an increase of 7%.
In Great Britain 1.4 million people were suffering from a workplace accident. There were 30.7 million working days lost due to work related injuries and accidents.*
